The international journal “Health Science Reports” has just published a study on environmental health knowledge among pediatric professionals in Catalonia. This is a collaborative work between institutions such as the Biogipuzkoa Research Institute, the University of the Basque Country, and the Pediatric Environmental Health Unit (PEHSU) of the Olot and Garrotxa Hospital Foundation, among others. The results show that although only 10% of these professionals use tools such as the pediatric environmental clinical history in their daily practice, interest in training in this area is high and the majority of pediatricians pass and obtain moderate scores on the scales developed on the health and environment of childhood and adolescence. The connection with nature of Catalan pediatricians has been a predictor of good knowledge of environmental health, and it is the residents and younger pediatricians who require greater training in this area.
This highlights the importance of having programs that improve not only training but also the implementation in the daily clinical practice of pediatric professionals of tools such as the Green Sheet (environmental screening) or others, which has recently been incorporated into the new “Protocol of preventive and health promotion activities in pediatric age” of the Department of Health. In this sense, the PEHSU has established an accredited and free basic training program that has already trained more than 80 pediatricians and pediatric nurses from all over Catalonia, and of which a 5th edition is currently planned for the month of April, as well as an advanced training course for those who have already passed the basic activity. This educational activity allows you to put into practice the knowledge learned later in your workplace through the Pediatric Environmental Health Reference Network. Also since the beginning of the year, the PEHSU has received approval from the Sub-Directorate General for Organization and Professional Development of the Department of Health for the training in environmental pediatrics of pediatric residents through external rotations.
